One of the most successful fashion houses in history is the Christian Dior brand that is still one of the most highly regarded influential power in the industry today and definitely among the toughest force to reckon with. The Christian Dior history can be traced back in 1938, when a highly talented young aspiring designer Christian Dior was took in by Robert Piguet when he decided to open a fashion house in Paris. This was after Piguet saw samples of Dior’s sketches that naturally showcased his creative flair for designing clothes for women. However, the stint only lasted a year since a war broke out and Dior has to leave to join the military.
In 1941, fresh from his return from the military service, he decided to join Lucien Lelong, another designer in creating wonderful designs of clothes that were slowly noticed by some fashionable elite. However, unlike other highly aggressive designers, young Christian Dior was all too happy to work in the background, mainly because he has a serious problem with shyness. But true talent never left unnoticed for long, and soon enough a cotton businessman Marcel Boussac persuaded Dior to take over his newly established couture operation. With much reluctance and heavy dose of persuasion from Boussac, Dior agreed and promptly assembled a small staff all consisted from his childhood friends and colleagues from work. The businessman invested millions into the shop and everything was eventually ready and working like a well-oiled machine.
And so the very first original Christian Dior women collection was presented in February 12, 1947, with 90 designs that were primary worn by six young girls. However, this particular collection was meticulously well thought of and Christian Dior spent hours painstakingly thinking of what the chic Parisian women and the rest of the world prefer. This resulted to his conclusion that most of these women have probably grown tired of having to do with shabby clothes and dresses that were strictly utilitarian that they all looked like generic type of uniforms. He was inspired with the very thought of being able to bring back bringing back beauty, of presenting very feminine, of soft round shapes and flowing skirts. This particular Christian Dior women collection was called Corolle, which literally means ring of petals, where the creative aspired to make more women feel like flowers all over again, as they all did back in the 30’s. Hence, the birth of the authentic Christian Dior fashion, which later took the fashion world by storm.
At first glance, women fell in love right away with the designs and resulted to what can only be described as an outstanding success. The Christian Dior women collection was promptly labeled “ The New Look”. However, such extravagance was also met with some resistance since the government condemned it as a total waste of money and branded outrageous. However, right under the innocent noses of the government, Dior has arranged a special show with the Queen and Princess Margaret as the primary audience along with other Royal ladies. Quite predictably, they all adorned the clothes and Princess Margaret who was regarded as the leader of the British fashion decided to wear the new look. The Board of Trade was soon silenced and later claimed that they cannot dictate the lengths of the skirts worn by women. His visit to the United States was also met with the same initial resistance but later relented when women were predominantly seen wearing the long skirts.
Suffice it to say, such sensational designs further fueled Dior’s fame and catapulted him to stardom in the fashion industry. The rest, as they say is history. Today, the Christian Dior fashion house still reigns supreme, now catering to both sexes and product lines were extended to include other luxury items such as fragrances and accessories .
