The Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana started this very popular fashion empire. They met in Milan while employed as working assistants in an atelier. Dolce who grew up in a small Sicilian village was a graduate of fashion design and was working for his family’s small clothing industrial unit. Gabbana on the other hand, was a trained graphic designer who was raised in Milan. The two had an instant aesthetic link who decided to put up a business together.
They have designed clothes for Madonna, Monica Bellucci, Kylie Minogue and some other known Hollywood celebrities. The private life of Gabbana and Dolce’s affair came out in the open last 2005, surprisingly publicizing their separation. But despite the parting, the company still stays the same and together, they continue putting together their fashion realm. Millions of pounds cannot be put at stake too especially that a long list of names, where most of them are high celebrities, is relying on their fashion thoughts. For them, the end of an affair does not necessarily follow the end of a working partnership too.
As one associate curator said, the brand label is not subtle at all. They design blatant statements yet they also have a huge sense of irony and whimsy. When they internationally launched their first collection in 1986, the brand soon spread out to knitwear, swimwear, accessories and lingerie – both for men and women.
Dolce & Gabbana clothing is categorized into two central lines for adults. D&G, the urban – inspired, cheaper lines and Dolce and Gabbana, the contemporary – stirred fashion made of luxury materials and is of higher price compared to the other line. Both however are created to make a timeless collection and both lines also offer beachwear, underwear, fragrances, timepieces and jewelry.
D & G Junior is another branch of the company, a separate line of fashion for the children division, ages 13 and below. D & G Junior goes after a trendy, contemporary fashion for the youth. It is more perceptibly persuaded by the pop culture.
Their first store was opened in the United States in March 1995. Since then, they got the interest of the other city and states and was invited to open more boutiques and shops to the other cosmopolitan cities all over the world. They made it to reality and now, their fashion empire is a symbol of posh designs and couture.
Dolce & Gabbana was once openly criticized for displaying an ad campaign, which was never pleasant to the eyes of the public especially the Spain community. This resulted to the pulling of the said ad. Recently, the company was also reprimanded by Britain’s advertising watchdog Advertising standards Authority (ASA) for showing models flaunting knives. This was seen and interpreted as violent and humiliating to women. Italian publications agreed with it and eventually banned the ad.
Had Dolce & Gabbana not been this popular, it would not be mentioned in numerous songs like Black Eyed Peas’ My Humps, Suga Suga by Baby Bash and Frankie J and to some of the movies and shows like The Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City. It gives you an idea about how the brand label makes your life sweet and luxurious.
