Kenneth Cole started everything with disguise. The birth of his Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc started when he got flat broke. This American fashion designer never deemed financial scarcity to interfere his will from earning a living. His tactic sold him 40,000 pairs of shoes in just two and a half days. Quite interesting, isn’t it?

Cole is a Brooklyn boy, whose parents were a shoe manufacturing company owners. He studied law at Emory University in Atlanta before joining their family business and starting his own line in 1982. The emerging designer had spent all his money designing shoes in Europe, as he wanted to follow the business footsteps of his family. However when he came back to his native place in New York, he had no place to sell those thousands of shoes he made. Neither does he have any money to open a store to display his crafts. Seeking some aid from a friend, he was able to secure a 40 – foot trailer and stuffed his shoes at the back, ready to be sold.

At that time, he can not get a permit to park since the only people allowed are those utility companies shooting full – length films. The idea to change his original name was decided. Kenneth Cole, Inc. was changed to Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc. Cole was granted permission to park the huge truck in midtown and sell shoes. However, the permit was given since they revealed they are shooting a fictitious film entitled “The Birth of a Shoe Company”.

True enough, it became the birth of Cole’s shoe company. And up to today, the changed company name is remained in honor of their atypical and interesting beginning. Eventually, Cole introduced his designs for Kenneth Cole men’s and women’s wear, and a secondary line of accessories he named Kenneth Cole Reaction. Black jeans, sweaters, jackets, colored dresses, skirts and soled shoes are among its regular staples for the line.

Its accessories collection is a creation that sticks to the brand’s sensibility. His shoes and bags come in bigger selection and the line also includes jewelry and watches. Basically, the designer wants to imbue a casual urban look and sophistication.

Cole’s company went public in 1994, it grabbed attention from the world of fashion and finance, dubbing it by Forbes as one of the country’s best small business, and hailing the designer itself as one of the best bosses in America. Today, he remains the CEO of his company, at the same time, the head designer and brand director of his ready – to – wear set of creations. Cole’s fashion takes modern aesthetics that imbues New York’s contemporary architectural designs. The clothes have a particularly European touch, harmonized with an ultramodern splash.

Cole’s favorite shades run from the classy black, charcoal, white, khaki and neutral shadows. Though he also has his pick of bright, seasonal colors.

Among the set of creations of Kenneth Cole is its limited edition of Bon Jovi Military Jacket, which is personally signed by Bon Jovi; Ten Hut, which is a mens nylon – made jacket, its woven shirts, cotton dress shirts, and of course the designer’s high – powered leather shoes and footwear. All these he provides for the essential daily lives of his fellows.

Kenneth Cole not only takes part in the fashion world, but also is active in social activism. He is a champion of Human rights, alleviating urban poverty and disseminating AIDS awareness to the public. He was in fact one of the first persons to bring AIDS awareness ads and campaigns to the American Pop Culture, since 1985.

Kenneth resides with his wife Maria Cuomo Cole, a daughter of a state governor and a sister n Attorney General in New York. They have three daughters.
